The Tao Te Ching, is one of the classics of the Daoist school of thought in ancient China. It consists of two parts, the Dao Jing and the De Jing, with a total of about 5,000 words. The book is known for its concise and profound, beautiful imagery, and stylistic brevity, elaborating on the philosophy of the Daoist school and exerting profound influence on traditional Chinese culture and philosophy.
The first chapter of the Tao Te Ching, "The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao; The name that can be named is not the eternal name," clearly expresses the core principle of Daoist thought: the Way (Dao) to govern is through inaction. Everything in essence is nothingness, and nothingness is the Dao. This is in sharp contrast to the Western philosophical system of "existentialism." Tao Te Ching holds that pursuing material or worldly things such as fame and wealth will only bring anxiety and worry; one must abandon these things in order to gain true freedom and peace.
